He also meets up with his old mentor, Carl Luce, sneaks into his family’s apartment to see Phoebe, and spends the night at the house of his old English teacher, Mr. For the next several days, Holden makes his way through the city, posing as an adult, drinking scotch and sodas, encountering prostitutes, and calling up old acquaintances like his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Sally Hayes. When Stradlater returns, Holden picks a fight with him before deciding to leave Pencey that instant, packing his bags and leaving Pennsylvania for New York City without another thought. Since then, Holden has built up an image of Jane as a perfect woman, which is why he finds himself distraught by the idea that Stradlater might try to have sex with her. That night, he discovers that his roommate, Ward Stradlater, is going on a date with Jane Gallagher, a girl whose family lived in the neighboring house two years ago when Holden’s family summered in Maine. This idea frustrates Holden, who thinks it’s absurd to approach life with such a narrowminded worldview. Spencer, who tells him to heed the headmaster’s advice to play the game of life by the rules. Holden also has a deceased younger brother, Allie, and an older brother, D.B. He is from New York City, where his younger sister, Phoebe, still lives with his parents. However, this contrasts to how Holden reacts to people closer to his age range such as Stradlater's date and Phoebe.The novel's narrator and protagonist, Holden is a high school junior who has flunked out of prep school several times. In the end Holden leaves when they both confront him about his issues, resulting in his defensive behaviour such as leaving both of them in a hurry. Mr Spencer wants Holden not to make a bad life decision, and Mr Antolini knows that knowledge will give Holden “an idea what seize mind has(190)” as well as a decent understanding of himself too. The two teachers want him to go back not because they are teacher, but instead genuinely care about him. The both of them are suggesting to go back to school, which to Holden are full phonies. Mr Spencer expresses how he has ro act now before it is too late, while Mr Antolini explains how it is better to live for a cause, rather then go downhill, as Holden is out of school. The commonality between the two teachers, are that Mr Antolini and Mr Spencer's are previous teachers of Holden, both display genuine concern to Holden’s well being, as well as give Holden honest advice. Eventually,Holden leaves Mr Antolini, lying about going back to the apartment after he goes to the station. Instead, J.D Salinger lived a highly private life after dealing with with copyright issues with is edditor. Surprising as it is with J.D Salinger, the author of The Catcher in the Rye one would expect that the author would relish in the fame that he received from his novel.
